Kickboxing blends strength, agility, and clean technique. Kicks are a defining feature of the sport, and learning how each one works helps you hit harder, move safer, and control the pace of a round. Below is a simple breakdown of the most common kicks plus tips you can use in your next class. If you want coaching that accelerates results, Gauntlet Fitness is ready to help.
The front kick is a core tool for creating space or landing a quick score. Drive the ball of your foot or lower shin straight forward, usually at the body or head. For power, focus on a tight chamber, strong hip snap, and a straight line from core to target. Keep your guard high and retract the leg fast to avoid counters.
The roundhouse is a workhorse for offense and defense. Pivot on the support foot and swing the shin toward the target while rotating the hips and torso. Aim to turn the hip over so the shin lands flush. Flexibility through the hips and a relaxed but fast swing create speed. Our programming at Gauntlet builds core strength and mobility so this kick feels smooth and sharp.
The side kick delivers force through the heel. Chamber the knee across your body, extend the leg straight into the target, and pull your toes back to expose the heel. Keep the shoulders stacked and avoid leaning too far. Balance and core stability are critical, so add slow tempo reps and wall drills to improve control.
The axe kick drops the heel downward from a high arc. Lift the leg straight up, then drive the heel down onto the target. It requires timing, flexibility, and explosive hip action. Add controlled hamstring mobility work and low-risk height progressions to develop the pattern safely.
